Dr. Miguel A. Peña-Ruiz

Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Miguel A. Peña-Ruiz, MD, MACP, is an internal medicine physician, entrepreneur, and Founder and CEO of Pathica Inc., a telemedicine company advancing physician collaboration across borders. With more than two decades of experience in Mexico and the United States, he combines clinical insight, bicultural perspective, and a longstanding passion for technology to address gaps in healthcare access and continuity.

His interest in technology began in middle school with a Commodore 64 computer, sparking a curiosity about how digital tools could solve problems. That early fascination evolved into a career connecting medicine, education, and entrepreneurship, guided by the belief that technology should strengthen human connections and make complex information more useful.

At Pathica, Dr. Peña-Ruiz leads the development of a platform that enables physicians in different countries to collaborate in supporting patients traveling or living abroad. His vision is to bridge healthcare systems, improve communication between clinicians, and help patients maintain continuity of care wherever life takes them.

His entrepreneurial journey includes creating Cursouniversitario.com, an online educational resource helping medical graduates prepare for residency entrance examinations in Latin America. He also developed MyDoctorSaid, an ambient artificial intelligence app designed to help patients remember and better understand their medical visits. By capturing conversations and making visit information easier to revisit, the app reflects his commitment to extending the value of care beyond the consultation.

Dr. Peña-Ruiz earned his medical degree at the Autonomous University of Baja California and completed internal medicine training in Mexico and at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. He has practiced with Southern California Permanente Medical Group since 2008 and serves as co-lead of Kaiser Permanente San Diego's hemochromatosis clinic.

An educator, mentor, and physician leader, he has contributed to clinical research, medical training, and initiatives supporting students from underserved backgrounds. His honors include the ACP Southern California Region III Laureate Award and, in 2026, Mastership in the American College of Physicians (MACP), recognizing his contributions to medicine.

Outside his professional life, Dr. Peña-Ruiz enjoys traveling, exercising, and practicing Kenpo karate. His love of music spans classical concerts and electronic dance music experiences at Tomorrowland and in Ibiza. These interests reflect the curiosity, discipline, and appreciation for different cultures that inform his personal life and leadership. Across his endeavors, he remains focused on a goal: bringing people, knowledge, and technology together to create a more connected and accessible healthcare experience for patients and physicians.
